1. Sir Harry Verney was married to Florence Nightingale's sister, Parthenope. Sir Harry originally proposed to Florence Nightingale in 1857 but she refused his offer and he subsequently married Parthenope. Sir Harry was a Member of Parliament and was 2nd Baronet of Claydon House in Buckinghamshire. Florence Nightingale's god-daughter, Ruth Verney, recalled that her grandfather, Sir Harry Verney, was quite devoted to Miss Nightingale. As a member of the House of Commons, "...he forwarded anything that she might want and lobbied and did everything he could to get what she wanted carried. The other members of the House of Commons called him 'the member for Florence Nightingale'; she would have liked that" (Verney, 1977).
