2. This statement apparently refers to the sick wards or infirmaries of workhouses which were highly unsanitary and greatly overcrowded. The aged, mentally ill, the sick, and the infirm all shared the same space. These conditions coupled with insufficient food, lack of individual eating utensils, toilet articles, and linen contributed to the infections. Buildings were not aired for fear of increasing the incidence of infections and transmission of diseases. The inadequate care rendered to patients resulted in a high death rate.

3. Nosology is the science of classifying diseases (noso=disease; logos=word).
