1. Miss Nightingale was referring to Sidney Herbert (1810-1861), an ally of hers during the Crimean War and secretary for war during 1859 and 1860. Herbert died in 1861.
2. Professor John Tyndall (1820-1893) was a physicist who made several discoveries about the effects of solar and heat radiation on atmospheric gases. He also demonstrated why the sky is blue, a concept later expounded upon by Lord Rayleigh. Tyndall proved that air which is free of germs does not lead to food decay.
