"Lavater was the last of the descriptive physiognomists. He expanded the above work into Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beforderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe, 1775-78. This was translated into English by H. Hunter as Essays on Physiognomy, 3vols.in 5, London, 1789-98 and other editions. His work was very influential on portaiture" (Morton's Medical Bibliography, Fifth Edition, Edited by Jeremy M. Norman).
