"The son of an Utrecht apothecary, he was inscribed at Utrecht University in 1670. After graduating from there, he was appointed lector on anatomy and then professor extraordinary of medicine. In 1680 he was appointed full professor of anatomy and botany. He served the university as professor for 30 years. He wrote several books, mainly on surgery and anatomy" (Dutch Medical Biography, 1984).
