"Roman naturalist and prolific writer who wrote an encyclopedia on natural history, History Naturalis, comprising 160 books, of which only 37 have survived. His work covered Greek and Roman authors and scientists and provides a valuable insight into culture and science in Roman and earlier Greek times. He was a prefect at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius which destroyed Pompeii and Herculaneum, and he lost his life by trying to get close to the mountain to observe and assist the refugees. The first translation of his work into Latin appeared in Venice in 1469, and an English translation was published in 1601" (A Dictionary of the History of Medicine, Anton Sebastian). (The Clendening copy is a German translation)
