Leipzig: Bey Weidmanns Erben und Reich, 1772.
"Lavater was the last of the descriptive physiognomists. He expanded the above work into Physiognomische Fragmente zur Beforderung der Menschenkenntnis und Menschenliebe, 1775-78. This was translated into English by H. Hunter as Essays on Physiognomy, 3vols.in 5, London, 1789-98 and other editions. His work was very influential on portaiture "(Morton's Medical Bibliography, Fifth Edition, Edited by Jeremy M. Norman).
"Physiognomist from Zurich who became a pastor at his local church of St. Peter. He published Treatise on physiognomy in 1772 and several other works. He died form a wound which he received when the French took Zurich in 1799" (A Dictionary of the History of Medicine, Anton Sebastian).
