Radio Program Features Clendening Library Manuscript

The radio presentation of a series of eight readings from a manuscript in the Clendening History of Medicine Library at the University of Kansas Medical Center premiered in September of 2005. The weekly radio program, Talking History, chose to record segments of Recolections [sic] of Field Hospital Service During the War of Secession By T.V. Brown, a beautiful copperplate recollection written in a 19th century notebook.

A chance conversation with Fiona Beattie, producer of Talking History, lead her to visit the Clendening Library to review and subsequently transcribe the manuscript. She then chose the segments for broadcast, selected the actor to portray T. V. Brown, and produced the series. Ms. Beattie also tracked down Theodore V. Brown's military records through the National Archives and Records Administration. She provided the photocopies to the Clendening Library so that patrons can follow the paper trail of Mr. Brown's military service as a Hospital Steward.

"Talking History is a thirty-minute weekly radio program produced by the Organization of American Historians that separates fact from fiction and myth from reality through interviews with nationally recognized historians and writers. Whether it is the dramatic history behind the building of the first transcontinental railroad, or an intriguing examination of the American romance with Robert Kennedy, Talking History has something for everyone. The show is available to more than four hundred stations nationwide on the Public Radio Satellite System and internationally on the Voice of America." http://talkinghistory.oah.org/

The installments air with the September 19, 2005 program and replace Talking History's weekly commentary and site of the week. Historian Bryan Le Beau, University of Missouri Kansas City, one of the founders of Talking History, acts as host and executive producer of the program. The series is read by David Jones, a student in the Graduate Theatre program at the University of Missouri Kansas City, and is edited by Alex Smith.
